On 28 June 1608 King James 1 granted the town of Banbury a charter allowing the town to govern itself. The positions of Mayor and Town Clerk were created, together with the right to have a gaol, the power to punish drunkards and the right to have gallows.

Hook Norton Managing Director James Clarke said: “Banbury 400 was brewed to mark the 400th anniversary of the Banbury town charter. “Hook Norton brewery is proud to have produced this special limited edition beer.”
